Menschen können sich begegnen, gemeinsam etwas entdecken, lesen, diskutieren und Erfahrungen teilen – unabhängig davon, ob sie Friendica, Mastodon, Hubzilla oder eine andere Fediverse-Anwendung nutzen.
Genau solche gemeinsamen Projekte machen für mich den besonderen Reiz des Fediverse aus. 🌐💚

Das Fediverse wird noch immer häufig wie ein weiterer Social-Media-Kanal betrachtet. Doch genau das greift zu kurz. Ein paar Gedanken zur Diskussion mit Kai Rüsberg (@Ruhrnalist) zum #FediLabDay.
Viele Verantwortliche im Medienbereich denken verständlicherweise in den Logiken von Instagram, TikTok oder X. Dort wird Erfolg über Reichweite, Interaktion, Klicks und Conversions gemessen. Wer Aufmerksamkeit erzeugt, gewinnt. Wer keine sichtbaren Reaktionen hervorruft, verliert an Bedeutung. Diese Denkweise stößt im Fediverse allerdings an ihre Grenzen.
Zum einen, weil viele Menschen hier Inhalte bewusst konsumieren, ohne ständig zu liken, zu kommentieren oder zu teilen. Stiller Konsum ist kein Fehler des Systems, sondern Teil seiner Kultur. Nicht alles, was gelesen wird, erzeugt auch eine sichtbare Reaktion. Man muss ja nicht like, um seinen Feed zu kuratieren.
Vor allem aber verkennt diese Sichtweise, was das Fediverse eigentlich ist.
Social ist heute anders
Social Media ist heute nicht mehr das, was es noch vor zehn oder fünfzehn Jahren war. Die großen Plattformen haben sich von Teilen des offenen Webs zu geschlossenen Ökosystemen entwickelt. Wer kein Konto bei Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn oder Facebook hat, kann viele Inhalte gar nicht oder nur eingeschränkt sehen.
Die Mehrheit der Menschen hat gar keinen Account auf den meisten dieser Plattformen:
- 60 % der Deutschen nutzen Instagram nicht.
- 80 % nutzen TikTok nicht.
- 90 % nutzen LinkedIn nicht.
- 95 % nutzen X nicht.
Wer Inhalte ausschließlich dort bereitstellt, macht sie für viele Menschen schwer oder gar nicht erreichbar.
Das Fediverse funktioniert grundlegend anders
Das Fediverse basiert auf offenen Standards. Inhalte können gelesen, verlinkt, geteilt und gefunden werden, ohne dass ein einzelnes Unternehmen die Kontrolle darüber besitzt. Es erinnert damit eher an E‑Mail oder das offene Web als an klassische Social-Media-Plattformen.
Deshalb halte ich es für einen Fehler, Mastodon und das Fediverse lediglich als zusätzlichen Social-Media-Kanal neben Instagram oder TikTok zu betrachten. Ich bin Mitglied des Medienrats der Medienanstalt Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein und wir sprechen immer mal wieder mit privaten Rundfunkanbietern. Da ist mir klar geworden, wie krass anders Radio und Fernsehen funktionieren als die For-Your-Feeds der Plattformen. Bei Radio und Fernsehen hängt es von jedem Anbieter selbst ab, ob er erfolgreich ist oder nicht. Die Media Broadcast verteilt im öffentlichen Auftrag nach neutralen Regeln nur die Frequenzen. Die sagen nicht, dass sie mehr modernen Schlager haben wollen und drehen dann die Reichweite von Rock-Sendern runter. So ist das auch im Fediverse. Nur ohne Lizenz- und Frequenzvergabe.
Für den öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunk könnte das Fediverse ein eigenständiger digitaler Verbreitungsweg sein. Ein Verbreitungsweg, der ähnlich unabhängig funktioniert wie Rundfunk selbst.
Mediatheken vernetzen!
Besonders deutlich wird das beim Blick auf die Mediatheken. tausende Menschen besitzen bereits Accounts bei ARD und ZDF. Trotzdem bleibt ihre Rolle dort passiv. Sie können Inhalte ansehen, aber nicht einmal ausdrücken, dass ihnen eine Sendung gefallen hat. Wer eine Dokumentation empfehlen, eine Serie unterstützen oder sich mit anderen Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauern austauschen möchte, muss dafür auf kommerzielle Plattformen wechseln.
Dabei ließe sich das auch anders denken: Wenn Mediatheken über ActivityPub Teil des Fediverse würden, könnten Nutzerinnen und Nutzer mit ihren bestehenden Accounts Sendungen folgen, Empfehlungen aussprechen, Diskussionen führen oder Inhalte in ihre eigene Timeline einbinden. Die Unterhaltung über öffentlich-rechtliche Inhalte würde dann nicht mehr auf Plattformen von Meta, ByteDance oder X stattfinden, sondern auf einer offenen Infrastruktur – größtenteils sogar bei den Sendern selbst.
Das wäre kein weiterer Social-Media-Kanal. Es wäre die Erweiterung der Mediathek zu einem öffentlichen Kommunikationsraum. Ich bin mir sicher, dass Ex-ZDF-Verwaltungsratsmitglied Leonhard Dobusch (@leonido) darüber schon länger redet. Ich finde es nur gerade nicht.
Gleichzeit sind die Öffentlich-Rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten so groß, dass ihre Anwesenheit einen großen Anteil zum Erfolg des Fediverse beitragen und den Weg auch für private Medien bereiten würde.
Digitalen Souveränität
Gerade unter dem Gesichtspunkt der digitalen Souveränität erscheint mir es mit wichtig, in dieser Art über das Fediverse zu sprechen. Während öffentliche Verwaltungen zunehmend auf Freie Software und offene Standards setzen, verlagert sich die digitale Öffentlichkeit immer stärker auf Plattformen, deren Regeln in Kalifornien oder Peking nach rein kommerziellen oder politischen Maßstäben festgelegt werden. Der öffentlich-rechtliche Rundfunk macht sich damit langfristig von Konzernen abhängig, deren Interessen nicht zwangsläufig mit dem öffentlichen Auftrag übereinstimmen.
Hinzu kommt eine Entwicklung, die viele noch unterschätzen: „Künstliche Intelligenz“ verändert die Art, wie Menschen Informationen finden. Geschlossene Plattformen werden dabei zunehmend zu Sackgassen – dort können und dürfen die Crawler der Anbietern nicht suchen. Offene Inhalte und offene Standards gewinnen dadurch an Bedeutung. Wer auch in Zukunft auffindbar und relevant bleiben möchte, sollte seine Inhalte nicht ausschließlich in den Silos großer Plattformen veröffentlichen.
Natürlich braucht auch das Fediverse Kennzahlen. Aber wenn wir seinen Erfolg ausschließlich an Likes, Boosts und Klicks messen, übertragen wir die Logik des Plattformkapitalismus auf ein Netzwerk, das gerade als Alternative dazu entstanden ist.
Das Fediverse ist deshalb nicht einfach ein weiterer Social-Media-Kanal. Es ist ein Baustein für digitale Souveränität, für eine offene digitale Öffentlichkeit und für ein Internet, das nicht vollständig von einigen wenigen Technologiekonzernen kontrolliert wird.
Wir sollten aufhören zu fragen, ob das Fediverse das nächste Instagram werden kann. Was passiert, wenn wir es stattdessen als digitale Infrastruktur begreifen? Ich mag deswegen auch den Begriff „Social Web“ lieber als „Fediverse“, denn das ActivityPub-Protokoll macht das klassische Web „social“.
