does anybody know if there is a client with an “offline first” design, similar to classic email/news clients? Linux and/or Android preferred.

      Good morning, world!

The day started with a report, a suspended user, and an undelivered email because the mailbox doesn’t exist.

Not exactly the best way to start the morning - but that’s part of running a Fediverse instance. ☕️

                Hokay, I've launched a webapp at https://discoverfedi.app

                What's it do?

                - Let's you browse the federated timeline of a selected instance (use the change instance button to switch to something else, with mastodon.social being the default)
                - Can switch to image-only view for a more "instagram" kind of feels
                - Search the entire federated network (uses the fedi observer api, is a bit wonky and am still working out the kinks)
                - Search hashtags on the instance you're currently viewing
                - Save the instance you're viewing to "favorites" (stored as a cookie)
                - Show/hide NSFW content
                - Uses GardenFence to block harmful instances from being accessed in the search and display (although blocked content may show up in an instance's federated timeline, this is one of those dents in the development that need un-dented)
                - Light and dark theme changed manually, or adjusted to system settings
                - Requires no logon credentials, no registration, since many many many instances are publicly visible
                - Works nice on a phone

                Issues:
                - Some instances may return an error
                - Some instances may not display properly, especially across different software
                - Search is a bit funky

                Why?

People outside of the fediverse always complaining about how difficult it is to see what the heck the fediverse is, or choose servers. Well, the problem? There's well over 20,000+ servers, and this may or may not fix the issue of "finding things" lol

This could be an iOS/Android app, but I don't feel like paying Apple or Google money for dev accounts

                here's a little more in-depth blog post: https://mkultra.monster/social-media/2025/10/13/discover-fedi/

Using the Fediverse is like using cannabis. It's not addictive, and you'll often meet kind, creative people who use it. You can relax and enjoy good conversations while scrolling through or , or even try out new recipes (perhaps during your munchies).

Mainstream social media, on the other hand, is more like sugar, alcohol, or tobacco: it’s designed to create dependence. The dopamine hits keep users hooked, and the outrage fuels engagement. These platforms profit from anxiety and aggression just as other industries profit from addiction. Think about the overdose of bad news and hate speech that keeps us glued to our phones.

Meanwhile, healthier, slower, community-based ways of connecting, both online and offline, are still considered odd or niche, like cannabis once was.

How do we break these taboos and help more people find a better high?

                    Hi everyone at BSD Cafe,
I’d like to start by thanking everyone for being part of this community - your presence and support truly mean a lot!
This message will appear across all my BSD Cafe social accounts, as I’d like to make sure it reaches everyone. Apologies for the duplication, but I genuinely believe it’s important.

Lately, there have been some discussions and questions surrounding content moderation on our instance, and I wanted to take a moment to offer some clarity and reaffirm the spirit of our community.

As you know, BSD Cafe was founded as a space primarily focused on technology, with a special place for *BSD and open source. More importantly, though, I want it to be a positive, welcoming, and constructive place for everyone. Our community guidelines, especially principles like "Promote Positivity" and "Be Kind", are central to this vision.
I've seen questions arise, sometimes involving accusations of political censorship from different perspectives, regarding why certain posts might be moderated. I want to be very clear on this: My moderation approach focuses primarily on the tone and manner of communication, not the specific topic itself.
I don't intervene simply because a post discusses politics, a particular tech company, or any potentially divisive subject. I do step in when a post, regardless of the topic or the viewpoint being expressed, adopts a tone that is:
                    * Provocative or intentionally confrontational.
                    * Aggressive or disrespectful towards other users or groups.
                    * Overly negative without constructive intent.
                    * Contrary to our core principles of kindness and mutual respect.
This standard applies equally to everyone and every "side". If someone were to post something like "Users of X software are idiots", I would address that just as readily as any other topic presented in a hostile way, even if I personally dislike software X.
The goal isn't to "censor" opinions, but to preserve an environment where discussions, even critical ones, can happen civilly and respectfully, without descending into flame wars or personal attacks. We aim to be a space that is pro-constructive dialogue and pro-positivity, not anti-anyone.
BSD Cafe is our shared digital home. Let's continue working together to keep it a pleasant and rewarding place where we can share ideas, learn, and connect over our shared passions (tech and beyond!), feeling comfortable and respected.

Thank you sincerely for your understanding and for everything you contribute to making BSD Cafe a special community!
Let's keep building this positive space together.

This response from the author of snac motivated me to continue, study, and appreciate this fantastic software for the Fediverse.
Snac is an example of true internet democracy: it runs everywhere and allows anyone to have their own autonomous, personal space in the Fediverse.

"Don't despair or quit", says an author who cares. And the Fediverse cares about them.

My friends, I'm so excited and happy to introduce a new project: the illumos Cafe!

The positive and constructive spirit of the BSD Cafe, created and maintained by all the friends who participated from day one in building a strong and friendly community, deserves to spread to other operating systems. Because there are other OSes that deserve attention, certainly more than they're getting right now.

Operating systems based on illumos (like SmartOS, OmniOS, Tribblix, OpenIndiana, etc.) are mature, stable, secure, and perfectly usable for a wide range of tasks. ZFS is native, zones are an excellent method for containerization, and bhyve and kvm coexist beautifully - and so much more, too much to list in a single post.

So from today, the illumos Cafe will stand alongside the BSD Cafe in creating a positive, respectful, and growth-oriented (but also relaxing!) environment, starting right here in the Fediverse with a Mastodon instance and a snac one.

I've written an introductory article about the project, including some technical details. I invite everyone interested to read it: it-notes.dragas.net/2025/08/18

Choose your table, take a seat and enjoy your time at the illumos Cafe!

I think it's time to write an for this account as well!

I'm Stefano Marinelli, Barista of the illumos Cafe and the BSD Cafe. I'm a technology and open source enthusiast, a strong advocate for , and against computer monoculture, even when it comes to open source solutions.

I've been active in the for years and am a firm believer in it. I decided to found this Cafe to bring the positive spirit of the BSD Cafe to curious and passionate users of based operating systems (, , , , etc.).

I'll mainly use this account for content related to this instance and illumos-based operating systems, while my account at the BSD Cafe - @stefano@bsd.cafe - remains my primary one.

For more information about the illumos Cafe, you can read the introductory post here: it-notes.dragas.net/2025/08/18

Friends of the BSD Cafe, I don't know if you've noticed that since yesterday, the instance has been showing the BSD Cafe logo as its icon. Before, I deliberately left the Mastodon one - but now I've had to add the BSD Cafe one because...well, you'll find out tomorrow morning 😊

                                                Stay tuned!

I tell you I really need saving from myself!
What am I even thinking and why would I want to move from daily driving FreeBSD with Wayland ( MangoWC ) to OpenBSD running Xenocara ( X11 - HerbstluftWM ) ?
Yes FreeBSD has way more packages plus more developed Wayland packages but I do find myself looking back all the time at X11 WM's and other software and wondering why I'm not using those. Yes I also know that many will say X11 is dead and Wayland is the future which I've been running for years but...... ?
please help me out me out here with your pro's and con's for both options.

A quiet afternoon, then a sudden, beautiful interruption. An unexpected message from a stunning person, a silent force in the fediverse. They've done more for this place and for me than so many of the more vocal accounts - more than I have, even.

This is the very essence of what I adore about this community. It's a place for genuine connection, where real people build real relationships.

To the one who sent that message: Thank you. It arrived exactly when I needed it most.

I have something else to be thankful for today. At this moment in time I am busy restoring functionality on systems so that I will be able to resume important remote tasks, which shall enable me to restore the level that I am used to, when it comes down to actual value of goods

This work is highly specialized and needs a set of computing systems, communication systems which use GSM messaging systems and other means of signalling, in order to properly Act, monitor react and deploy the remote systems, of which a set of those are managed deployed monitored and configured through Proxmox.

@gyptazy has made incredibly wonderful contributions to the community of Open Source and I'm specifically highlighting his work in for example the great Proxmox load balancer.

Through the Work Of Him and other hundreds to thousands nameless Open Source coders, programmers en hackers am I able to do this work.

I am fortunate enough to have virtually met him here on the FediVerse through a beautiful forward that @stefano has made, who also makes great contributions in Open Source

Without the work of these incredible people none of this would have been possible. I would be sitting watching this beautiful scenery that I would have made myself with props

There would not be any Open Source Operating Systems, plural, driving the displays.

Being Grateful is important. Giving Thanks sends a beautifully Modulated Pulse of Energy, through the Universe to everyone.

I am thankful to you all
