m5l.eu is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
I was thinking about forking ActivityPub and calling it ActivityCafe.
It will natively only support 'ristretto' connections, and the only allowed emoji is 🤌.
How many instances must an admin spin up
before you can call it a fediverse?
The answer, my friend, is pinging in the wind,
The answer is pinging in the wind.
Today I successfully tested a migration from my 'historic' Akkoma instance to littleFedi, without changing the domain name and without breaking the federation.
The procedure involves extracting the keys, so federated instances will accept this without any issues. In their eyes, there will be no particular differences, and they will gladly digest it without breaking the federation.
I have documented the procedure and kept the tool. I'm probably going to create something similar for Mastodon, though it will be a bit more complex.
It’s not Tuesday yet, but it will be soon.
And I want to thank @grunfink for creating and maintaining snac. Tomorrow I’ll talk about FediMeteo at DevConf, and it would never have come to be if it weren’t for snac and for the help the author gave me in fixing some things to optimize its use.

I promised it, so here it is. This is a recording of littleFedi running on a Raspberry Pi Zero W on NetBSD.
Everything is on the SD card, the database is SQLite, and caching is enabled.
Personally, I won't comment on responsiveness or anything else; I'll just say that when I use it (both via the web interface and with apps like MastoBlaster or IceCubes), I find it hard to believe what kind of hardware it's running on.
Users' sessions (by default, a maximum of 8 users but configurable) are kept "warm" with every interaction or federated activity for 15 minutes since the last login; after that, the server enters "low power mode" and simply processes incoming data without activating the (users' timelines, etc.) cache.
We don't need to get ripped off for more powerful hardware, which comes with outrageous costs these days.
We just need to optimize and build efficient software.
Abundance led to waste.

The littleFedi caching system is configurable and adaptable. Caching helps immensely, and for this very reason, you can choose to keep the cache "warm."
By default, if enabled (which makes a lot of sense on slow hardware), the system tracks user activity over the last n minutes (15 by default). For those minutes following the last interaction with the system, the cache will be kept warm.
Does a new post arrive in the timeline? It gets processed and cached, immediately (and partially) re-processing the timeline cache. The user will see it immediately in the timeline.
On a Raspberry Pi Zero W running NetBSD on an SD card, this means dropping the timeline generation time from about 5 seconds down to roughly 0.20 seconds.
After 15 minutes of inactivity from the user, the system will stop keeping the cache warm, reducing the CPU load to nearly zero (provided you aren't doing local processing of remote images, of course - which is also configurable). Upon the user's first visit, it will take a few extra seconds (cold cache), but from that moment on, everything will be almost instantaneous.
There's also a cache for the federation activities (a boost won't cause constant reprocessing of that post), but this isn't that different from other implementations' approach.
I don't know if I'll manage to do the screen recording today or if it will end up being tomorrow, but I'm still amazed at how it runs on the Raspberry Pi Zero W with NetBSD.

The arbitrary limits in #Mastodon are a little infuriating.
And I really want to like Mastodon. It was my first experience on the #fediverse, and I actually like the UI/UX, for the most part.
Monday Monday...
Last night there was a blackout for over an hour. The local substation overloaded because everyone in the area had their AC running on full blast. And this week they say they're coming to finish the FTTH installation.
My wife bets that the appointment will fall through this time too.
We'll see!
Have a great week, #BSDCafe

I checked 4160 fediverse instances for their connectivity.
- A / AAAA record persent
- Reachabliltiy over #IPv6 if AAAA present.
107 Instances announce AAAA records but have broken inbound IPv6
2141 are #DualStack and have working inbound #IPv6
Way to go.

Dear friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse,
some of you have expressed the desire to offer a bit of support to BSD Cafe.
In response, I've set up a Ko-fi page and a LiberaPay account for the project.
You can now buy a coffee for BSD Cafe at this link: https://ko-fi.com/bsdcafe or https://liberapay.com/bsdcafe

Two things you can see here... It's pretty hot! That's why I stayed home and implemented a missing feature into snac. That's what you can also see - it finally sends push notifications to devices! In this case, we can see notifications coming from #MastoBlaster App for iPhone.
What we can also see, it's still a bit faulty and not the expected content, but a first success here at least ;) I'll make some further adjustments when there's time and get in touch with @grunfink@comam.es to check if we can get this upstream. Thanks to @stefano@bsd.cafe for testing with me :)

Does anyone have any ideas on how to migrate mail services OFF NameCheap? Namely their Jellyfish/MS Outlook365 integration thingy cleanly?
Someone I know asked me about this and I'm unsure how to migrate mail off of NameCheap but they still want to retain the Microsoft stuff.
Migrating off of Microsoft is not really an option for them (their business requires it). Any ideas?
Please boost if possible. Thanks so much #fediverse !
#Mastodon 4.6 is here! It's been a long time in the works, but it's finally ready. In this release, we're introducing Collections—a way to share curated collections of profiles to help old and new users discover more of the #Fediverse. We're also updating the look of profiles, alongside many quality of life and accessibility improvements. Read more here:

Aggressive caching for a Mastodon reverse proxy: what to cache, what to never cache, and why content negotiation will eventually betray you
The same URL serves HTML to browsers, JSON to apps, and ActivityPub to remote instances. Here's how I cache Mastodon with nginx without betraying any of them.

We couldn’t agree more. #OpenSource is critical to a robust and independent society.

Run your own decentralized social platform on shared hosting or a tiny VPS WITHOUT Redis, PostgreSQL, or complex infrastructure.
What it makes so special to me? It looks awesome, comes with a great admin web interface and does not require a VPS instance where it can also be operated on a cheap shared hosting systems. By the given requirements, it also easily runs on a #RaspberryPI and all kind of systems, including #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #Illumos and more!
This all makes it perfect to everyone and even beginners to run their own instance. With relay support (e.g., fedi-relay.gyptazy.com) it even can consume and post content over non-directly connected instances in the #fediworld!

This is interesting and the dev confirmed that #MastoBlaster works with #Starling
I'll create a test instance to try it.
