The #BlueSkyOutage is why I still rely on and prefer Mastodon for my social media. I'm on Bluesky, but giving all control to one company is not what I want again. There is always a chance an instance goes down, but not the whole #Fediverse.

Servers on the Fediverse are totally independent of each other, with no centralised infrastructure at all. If one server goes down, other servers can keep going. The essence of the Fediverse is that it does not put all its eggs in one basket.

Updated servers and jails to FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE-p5

1.
proxy_cache_path (S3 media cache) was already on a ZFS dataset with autosnapshot disabled .. But proxy_temp_path and client_body_temp_path (both nginx temp folders) weren't. Leading to extremely bloated daily ZFS snapshots for the Nginx jail. Changed those and cleaned old snapshots -> 31GB reclaimed space

2.
Cleaned up Database Snapshots and did a pg_repack on prod to reclaim deleted database pages -> 3GB reclaimed space

3.
Fixed issue with backend path over gif tunnel to Elasticsearch (6in6). Turned out to be a MSS issue (clamp-mss to 1140 on the tunnel iface solved it!)

4.
Fixed IPv6 routing issue for Prometheus Monitoring after reboot (rc.d static_routes != ipv6_static_routes)

All in all, our instance is in very good shape again :-)

Kann mir jemand hier im #Fediverse ein paar Details zu den Leuten hinter #AlienOS geben?

Ich habe da so ein paar Dinge gesehen, vor allem Wallpapers mit Heinrich Himmlers eso-germanisch-völkischer #SchwarzeSonne, die als Mosaik im SS-Sakralbau, der Wewelsburg verlegt ist, und wüsste gerne wie so ein brauner Schmutz zum OpenSource Gedanken passen soll.

Kommentare der Macher lassen zumindest auf eine völlige Gleichgültigkeit zur NS Ikonographie schließen. Und schon die Duldung von Nazi-Symbolik ist in meinen Augen Zustimmung.

I recently connected my single-user instance to just 3 new relays to improve federation. This is the infrastructure cost of that visibility.

In just 10 days, my S3 bucket for media storage jumped from roughly 50GB to almost 190GB. The total number of objects doubled, going from 280k to over 560k, and the curve is still going up.

It is fascinating to observe the physical weight of the Fediverse traffic translated into raw data. I will definitely need to configure a stricter media retention policy and tune it to keep this background process from eating my storage budget.

I recently discovered ntfy.sh and it is brilliant in its simplicity. I am currently rewriting my bash scripts to drop AWS SNS in favor of it.

Getting a direct push notification to my phone (and not only this) via a simple curl command is so much cleaner than setting up IAM roles and SNS topics.

I still absolutely love email as a primary protocol, but my inbox really does not need to know every single time a cron job finishes successfully 😅

Since there is no revoking sessions in Pixelfed, and changing password doesn't log you out of any sessions, be careful with your Pixelfed credentials.

If you use Pixelfed and your account gets hacked, you can't do anything. Perhaps contacting Dansup is the only option.

I always ask similar questions like the following,

What will you do when you discover that the kernel of your favorite Operating System now gets programming assistance in any form of a power guzzling ocean warming large language model?

Will will you fork the kernel yourself? Do you have the programming capability

There are a lot of folk who are pissed off at Linus Torvalds, for allowing some of his maintainers to use large language models to assist in finding bugs.

The Head Programmer of the fantastic and Beautiful curl also uses a large language model in some form, to hunt for bugs, because both he and Greg from the Linux kernel, saw that the LLM used on GitHub is now suddenly much better at finding those pesky bugs.

Mind you, the only LLM I like is the one that runs locally on my low powered Android phone. That's a micro LLM

Wir sind nicht umsonst im Fediverse, dennoch ist für viele Menschen Instagram weiterhin ein zentrales Medium, selbst linke Kreise wollen vielfach auf ein Konto nicht verzichten.

Jetzt implementiert Meta, zu dem facebook und Instagram gehören, wie The Intercept berichtet, neue Regeln: "Die neuen Regeln von Meta ermöglichen es dem Unternehmen, Nutzer zu sperren oder Kommentare zu unterdrücken, die das Wort „Antifa“ enthalten, sofern sie mit „Inhaltsbezogenen Warnsignalen“ einhergehen."

Bald wird vielleicht die Verwendung des Wortes Antifa, selbst in historischem Kontext, gänzlich verunmöglicht, denn auch hier sind massive Zensurmaßnahmen von Meta vorgesehen: "Wird „Antifa“ im Zusammenhang mit „Verweisen auf historische oder aktuelle Gewalttaten“ erwähnt – einer Kategorie, die so weit gefasst ist, dass sie „historische Kriege“ und „Schlachten“ umfasst –, wird auch dieser Beitrag sanktioniert. Sollte Meta diese Regel wörtlich anwenden, könnte das Unternehmen beispielsweise Beiträge einschränken, in denen der antifaschistische Charakter des Zweiten Weltkriegs mit der heutigen Antifa-Bewegung verglichen wird."

Der rechte Kulturkampf nimmt weiter Fahrt auf und versucht alles, insbesondere radikal, linke auszuschließen. Genau das, ist in der DNA des faschistoiden BigTech angelegt. Das kommunizieren sie auch relativ offen.
