Update: I just shared the Italian version of the Fedi promo video with my parents. (I hadn’t dared send them the English one because they would not have understood a thing).

My mamma had the most mom-like response (see screenshot). Now awaiting a bullet point rebuttal by dad 😆

I also plan to quiz them tomorrow: “so what is the Fediverse?”

    Dear Fedi friends,

You asked for it and here it is: an version of my Fedi promo video:

    news.elenarossini.com/fedivers

Or as I like to think about it: a video about the that even my non-techie mom would understand.

I hope you'll find this useful in spreading the word about the Fediverse with your Italian friends and family.

Alas these are all the languages I speak (Italian, French, English) but there are other foreign versions by volunteers coming soon.

          Hello Fedi friends!

I'm currently putting the finishing touches to the and I'm really moved to see how many foreign language subtitles it has thanks to the generous help of volunteers: a grand total of 11 translations (plus the original English).

Special thanks to @nacly for traditional Chinese subs and to @erikkemp for the Dutch ones.

I'll post a link to a blog post with the video tomorrow morning at around 10am CET.

Good night & thanks for all your support! 🌝✨

As you can see here in the screencap I have 5,000 characters that I'm allowed to fill on this FediVerse server. That means that if you look carefully you can find an instance where there is no silly limit to the amount of characters, you're allowed to use.

@stefano configured the max amount possible. Thank you 💕 Stefano!

The last time you told me that you have a client which converts MarkDown into is HTML so the markdown code is visible in the toot. Did I remember that right?

The screencap shows a shot of a social media application interface, specifically a Mastodon instance. The interface is dark-themed, with a black background and white text. At the top, there is a header with options for hashtags, mentions, and language selection, along with a profile picture icon. Below the header, the text reads "Posting as [@]Dendrobatus_Azureus[@]mastodon.bsd.cafe" and "Replying to [@]rl_dane." The user is typing a reply, with the text "[@]rl_dane[@]polymaths.social" visible. The keyboard is visible at the bottom of the screen, with various keys including numbers, letters, and special characters. The number of characters typed is displayed as 4991, and there is a blue "post" button on the right side. The overall layout is typical of a social media platform, with a focus on text input and reply functionality.

In a world full of conflicts, selfishness, and egocentrism, it would be nice to focus on the good that others do, what makes our lives better thanks to the contribution of others.

                        Good evening, !

Today I was finally able to spend the whole day working on FreeBSD and OpenBSD servers, after a few days full of other activities.
I must confess - it’s been incredibly relaxing and refreshing.

I upgraded an OpenBSD server with a colleague (inside a bhyve VM - we were both connected to the same tmux session).
He was amazed by how simple the process was, and actually said “WOW” when the server sent the entire upgrade output via email.

Tomorrow, he’s planning to install a new OpenBSD server and “play around” with it.
                        Mission accomplished. 🙂

When you've configured your client, you will immediately notice that you do not need to enter a password for your client. The system is passwordless by default.

What you need to do is be careful with, is who you share your link with. Go and play with it, see if it something for you

Goodmorning and , another update! ☕

Our new mod team is complete and has just started training! 😊 Over the next weeks they'll go through the CoC and modding rules, they'll handle a wide variety of practice cases, and will then move on to (already resolved) real reports. Because we're based all over the world, from Japan, South Korea, India, Europe, South Africa, to the US, the chat is asynchronous and slow. Hence the training will take a while.

Team meeting this morning to do some filming for & to discuss the next steps. An issue that came up beautifully illustrates the power of the & decentralized social media.

The 1st video introducing the Fediverse to people not familiar with it will discuss Silicon Valley's .

could take down the video if offended right wing people complain about it.

But if I upload the video to ... who are you reporting the video to? To ME! I'm the admin 🤗

3 THINGS I'm grateful for when it comes to the :

1: I (almost) never see any AI slop. I'm subscribed to @404mediaco and I'm constantly horrified by their articles on AI slop - so common on Meta platforms. Not here. So .

2: I'm never force-fed content by people I don't follow – so common in other places where algorithms rule. My time & attention are treated with RESPECT.

3: People here protect the privacy of children / don't post their pics. Consent is BIG.

                                              Good morning Fedi friends!

Here is a sneak peek at the video I've been working on with @samaaberg & @TheLifeofTarzan. I feel super lucky to be doing this with them: they are brilliant! ✨

It's the 1st time in my life I'm in front of the camera - thank you Sam & Riyen for your patience (I'm sooo uncomfortable being on screen) 😅

You'll notice in the video has a cameo - along with awesome stickers by @andypiper @yunohost @Mastodon and @molly0xfff

The lid is in focus while my face is slightly blurry. There is a bookcase behind me. On the lid of the laptop you can see multiple stickers: "I am part of the rebel alliance" "YunoHost" the Mastodon logo, an illustration of filmmaker Agnès Varda, "We can have a better internet" and "good vibes only". Hi everyone at BSD Cafe,
I’d like to start by thanking everyone for being part of this community - your presence and support truly mean a lot!
This message will appear across all my BSD Cafe social accounts, as I’d like to make sure it reaches everyone. Apologies for the duplication, but I genuinely believe it’s important.

Lately, there have been some discussions and questions surrounding content moderation on our instance, and I wanted to take a moment to offer some clarity and reaffirm the spirit of our community.

As you know, BSD Cafe was founded as a space primarily focused on technology, with a special place for *BSD and open source. More importantly, though, I want it to be a positive, welcoming, and constructive place for everyone. Our community guidelines, especially principles like "Promote Positivity" and "Be Kind", are central to this vision.
I've seen questions arise, sometimes involving accusations of political censorship from different perspectives, regarding why certain posts might be moderated. I want to be very clear on this: My moderation approach focuses primarily on the tone and manner of communication, not the specific topic itself.
I don't intervene simply because a post discusses politics, a particular tech company, or any potentially divisive subject. I do step in when a post, regardless of the topic or the viewpoint being expressed, adopts a tone that is:
                                                * Provocative or intentionally confrontational.
                                                * Aggressive or disrespectful towards other users or groups.
                                                * Overly negative without constructive intent.
                                                * Contrary to our core principles of kindness and mutual respect.
This standard applies equally to everyone and every "side". If someone were to post something like "Users of X software are idiots", I would address that just as readily as any other topic presented in a hostile way, even if I personally dislike software X.
The goal isn't to "censor" opinions, but to preserve an environment where discussions, even critical ones, can happen civilly and respectfully, without descending into flame wars or personal attacks. We aim to be a space that is pro-constructive dialogue and pro-positivity, not anti-anyone.
BSD Cafe is our shared digital home. Let's continue working together to keep it a pleasant and rewarding place where we can share ideas, learn, and connect over our shared passions (tech and beyond!), feeling comfortable and respected.

Thank you sincerely for your understanding and for everything you contribute to making BSD Cafe a special community!
Let's keep building this positive space together.
