Als ich mir gerade eben nach langer Zeit mal wieder das Showcase von Publii anschaute, um neue, interessante Seiten zu entdecken, sah ich doch tatsächlich, dass mein Blog dort aufgenommen wurde. 😂

I posted a few things over the past days, and some people noticed that I have been more absent than usual. I think it is right to give an update on the situation.

Starting in mid-December, my wife came down with the flu. Nothing serious, but it left her with a problem that all the doctors we consulted have identified as long flu. Similar to long COVID, it is a debilitating condition, at times completely disabling. She started a treatment, but had some issues and had to change it. This treatment, however, makes the symptoms worse for a few weeks before improving them, and the result is that we are currently in that phase: she is not well, she is worried, and of course I am too.

This has given me time, over the past weeks, to focus on projects like MastoBlaster, also to keep my mind active on something different, something good for my spirit and mental well-being.

But in these days, probably the hardest in years, I am in "emergencies only" mode, or almost. No tiramisu, few outings, some good lasagna - but mostly concern and hope for a return to normality. The doctors told her that in her case it is a temporary condition, but it is not clear exactly how long it will last, which is why there is a treatment, to help her live normally while everything gradually returns to normal. In the meantime, I am the solid part, but clearly I also have to take care of everything she usually handles.

Life is more often uphill than downhill, so we need to make the most of the good moments and not focus on trivial things. This is why I have always tried to make this place a positive and peaceful one: we all have battles to fight, serious or less serious problems, happiness and despair. Here, at least, we can focus on what you enjoy.

So I leave you with two coffees, made with my mother’s moka pot, which remind me of a peaceful day in this period when the sky outside and the climate inside are the same color: gray.

Was tue ich für eine bessere Welt? 🌍

Ich stelle mir diese Frage tatsächlich selbst sehr oft. Ich stelle sie mir, weil ich finde, dass wir sie uns alle öfter stellen sollten, ehrlich, ohne schönreden, ohne wegzuschauen.

Und... Ich mache das nicht perfekt. Ich scheitere auch. Ich bestelle auch mal etwas online. Ich bin kein moralisches Vorbild, ich versuche nur bewusst zu leben.

Technologie & digitale Selbstbestimmung

Ich nutze seit 1998 ausschließlich Linux. Privat und beruflich. Kein Windows, kein macOS. Nicht aus Trotz, sondern weil freie, offene Software für mich eine politische Haltung ist. Wer seine Daten, seine Werkzeuge und seine digitale Infrastruktur vollständig in den Händen von Konzernen lässt, die damit Milliarden verdienen, gibt ein Stück Souveränität ab. Das will ich nicht. Ich verwalte privat und beruflich dutzende Linux-Server, und ich tue das mit Überzeugung, nicht nur mit Kompetenz.

Kein Facebook (mehr). Kein Twitter/X (mehr). Kein Instagram. So wenig Amazon wie möglich. Ich weiß, das klingt für manche radikal. Für mich ist es konsequent. Diese Konzerne verdienen an unserer Aufmerksamkeit, an unseren Daten, an unserer Wut. Ich verweigere dieses Geschäftsmodell.

Stattdessen bin ich hier, im Fediverse. Dezentral, offen, menschlich. Ich betreibe mit lsbt.me eine eigene Mastodon-Instanz: ein sicherer, queerer Raum für LGBTQ+ Menschen. Ohne Algorithmus, der Hass belohnt. Ohne Konzern, der entscheidet, welche Stimmen sichtbar sind. Bei uns entscheidet die Community.

Ökologie & bewusstes Leben

Meine Frau Michelle und ich leben in unserem eigenen Haus und versuchen jeden Tag, unseren ökologischen Fußabdruck so klein wie möglich zu halten. Auf unserem Dach arbeitet eine 11-kWp-Photovoltaikanlage, gespeichert in einem 11-kWh-Heimspeicher. Wir produzieren unseren Strom weitgehend selbst. Die Sonne schickt keine Rechnung.

Wir fahren wenig, kaum 5.000 bis 7.000 Kilometer im Jahr. Bald steigen wir auf ein Elektroauto um, den Skoda Epiq, und laden es dann mit unserem eigenen Sonnenstrom. Mit einer PV-optimierten Wallbox schließt sich der Kreis.

Hinter unserem Haus liegt ein großer Garten, der uns echte Selbstversorgung ermöglicht. Bohnen, Kohlrabi, Salate, Kartoffeln, Zwiebeln, Knoblauch, Erdbeeren, Brombeeren. Mehrere große Kirschbäume, ein alter Walnussbaum, viele Apfelbäume. Was wir nicht selbst ernten, kaufen wir regional und saisonal. Essen hat für uns wieder einen Weg, und eine Herkunft.

Und ja, ich bin mir sehr bewusst, dass ich das Privileg habe, mir diese Infrastruktur (Haus/PV/E-Auto) leisten zu können, und sehe es gerade deshalb als Verantwortung, es auch genau so zu tun.

Politik & Haltung

Ich bin politisch. Sehr. Manche nennen mich linksextrem, ich finde das ehrlich gesagt eher bezeichnend für den Zustand unserer Debattenkultur als für meine tatsächliche Haltung. Ich bin weder gewalttätig noch verfassungsfeindlich. Ich bin schlicht der Meinung, dass Menschenwürde, soziale Gerechtigkeit und Klimaschutz keine Verhandlungssache sind. Ich bin Mitglied bei DIE LINKE, weil ich an eine Gesellschaft glaube, die niemanden zurücklässt.

Ich bin Feministin. Antifaschistin. Und ich stehe laut dazu, auch wenn es unbequem ist.

Aktivismus für trans* & LGBTQ+ Menschen

Ich bin eine Frau mit transgeschlechtlicher Vergangenheit. Und ich sage das nicht als Disclaimer, sondern als Erklärung, warum ich tue, was ich tue. Ich habe am eigenen Leib erfahren, wie es sich anfühlt, wenn niemand für einen kämpft. Wie es sich anfühlt, unsichtbar zu sein, diskriminiert zu werden, nicht zu wissen, ob es überhaupt einen Ausweg gibt.

Deshalb kämpfe ich. Ich habe jahrelang Selbsthilfegruppen für trans*, inter* und nicht-binäre Menschen geleitet, in Radolfzell, Ravensburg, Villingen, Sulz am Neckar und darüber hinaus. Ich habe als Peerberaterin hunderte Menschen auf ihrem Weg begleitet, bei Fragen zu Hormonen, Operationen, Ärzten, Behörden, Arbeitgebern, Familie. Ich habe Vorträge und Seminare an Schulen, Universitäten und Kliniken gehalten, um Transphobie zu bekämpfen, bevor sie entsteht.

Ich habe das nicht gemacht, weil ich musste. Ich habe es gemacht, weil niemand das durchmachen soll, was ich durchgemacht habe.

Tue ich genug? Nein. Niemand tut je „genug". Aber ich tue, was ich kann, mit dem, was ich habe, jeden Tag ein bisschen bewusster. Und ich glaube, das ist der einzig realistische Anspruch, den wir an uns selbst stellen sollten.

Was tust du für eine bessere Welt? Ich frage das nicht rhetorisch. Ich bin wirklich neugierig. 🌱

In a recent comparison of engagement around a Leave.X campaign post,[1] someone pointed out that a female journalist who is active in the feminist movement and critical of Big Tech had a very different experience than others.

The Mastodon post was shared twice, while the Bluesky version was shared over 200 times and received significantly more interactions. This raises questions about tech-savvy spaces like Mastodon and how they reflect broader societal issues.

Yesterday I submitted the first "public" build of MastoBlaster to Apple, and it is now under review. Once it's approved, I'll share the link with a few people for testing and gradually expand the beta as we go.

The goal is to provide a public beta to the entire Fediverse before the official release, so everyone can try it out. I've already been using it as my primary app for several days and, aside from a few bugs I still need to fix, it’s working well.

EDIT: the person I contacted replied and the new posts have the correct attribution. So the problem is solved.

There is a Mastodon instance that publishes content from its own PeerTube instance. These contents are narrated aloud, likely by an AI, in several languages, and are based on articles that appear online. Today this happened with an article I shared from my blog.

The problem is that there is no attribution to the original author and or the original source site. On the contrary, it gives the impression that the content was produced directly by whoever runs that site or instance.

This is completely detached from the idea of properly sharing information. Taking inspiration is a wonderful thing. Claiming someone else’s work as your own is not.

I contacted the account in question this morning. I have not received any reply, even though other content has been published in the meantime. A short while ago I also contacted the instance administrator.

I will wait until tomorrow morning. If I do not receive a satisfactory response, I will publicly disclose the instance and the related content and block the entire domain. There are additional details that I prefer not to reveal at this time which further worsen the situation.

Today looks like it’s going to be an interesting day. It started off on the right foot, which hasn’t exactly been a given these past few months, and there’s even a bit of sunshine, though rain is expected later.

This morning I’ll be working on some interesting tasks, setting up two FreeBSD systems and speaking with a client about an interesting project based on OpenBSD. I’ll share more details once everything is clearly outlined.

In the afternoon I’ll meet with the insurance adjuster to figure out how to handle the whole #Crapturday situation. The floors are still bringing salt crystals back to the surface because of how long the “water” lingered, and the office is still almost unusable.

Hopefully everything will go smoothly.

I'm the barista and main administrator of the bsd.cafe and illumos.cafe instances (and other projects), a computer science enthusiast who's been fascinated by technology since childhood. I'm a big supporter of open-source solutions and enjoy working with #BSDs as well as #illumos based OSes and #Linux systems. I enjoy #music and #photography. 1/2 of the Fediverse uses Mastadon and the other 1/2 uses Misskey. Misskey has been around longer than Mastodon and I would encourage you to include support for it.

The time is probably right.

Back in 2022, when I was still using iOS, I wasn’t completely happy with the Fediverse apps that were available. I was mostly using Akkoma, and the interface I liked the most was actually its web UI, even on mobile. So I started playing with Xcode and put together the foundations of an app tailored to my needs.

A lot has changed since then and today we have great alternatives like IceCubes, Mona, Ivory, etc. Each one has strengths and weaknesses though, so I picked up my old project again and kept pushing it forward.

So I’m happy to announce that my app will finally see the light: I’ve been using it for the past few days and, in my spare time, I’m fixing bugs and adding missing features. I’m building it around my own needs, so it doesn’t have to “appeal to everyone”. I wouldn’t call it opinionated, but it’s definitely targeted.

The app will have one key trait: #snac2 support will be a first-class feature, not an incidental one. Many apps, especially on iOS, support snac as a side effect, but the experience is often not optimal. In this case, the choice is deliberate and it strictly follows the Mastodon API support implemented by snac. So snac will work properly (within the limits of the platform, of course).

Among the features already implemented: the app is minimal and lightweight (under 10 MB, including debug code), easy on RAM, and privacy-first (for example it strips EXIF data from media before posting, so the server will never see it). On snac it also cleans up the "Boosted by Aoderelay" messages that appear when using a relay, removes the character limit, and supports posting in Markdown.

I also added support for Apple Intelligence to generate alt text, both for the media I post and for media posted by others that is missing alt text.

Everything is processed locally through Apple APIs and only on supported devices. The results aren't amazing, Apple Intelligence is extremely limited, but in my opinion it's the only privacy-friendly and ethical way to approach it. And of course, you can disable it.

On Mastodon it supports all the main features: lists, quote posts, granular notifications (you can choose what you want for each category), notification grouping, multi-account support, and it works.

It's still missing a few things (block, etc.) and has some bugs, which I’m spotting as I keep using it.
As soon as it's stable enough, I'll invite a few people to test it. I still haven't fully decided how I'll distribute it: an Apple Developer account has a yearly cost, and I hope to reuse it for other projects too. So this app might be paid, with a trial period, but if possible (I still need to check what’s feasible) I'd like it to be free if you connect to one of the BSD Cafe instances, illumos Cafe, or any snac instance, including your own.

I don't know how long it will take before it's ready... but I can already tell you what it will be called.
It already has a name, and it's... MastoBlaster.

This name was chosen for personal reasons, and also because of its similarity to Master Blaster by Stevie Wonder, which even today feels relevant and fitting for the Fediverse.

This morning I turned on the coffee machine and made my espresso.
Then I turned it off and organized the rest of breakfast.
After that, I turned the coffee machine on (hey, it warmed up instantly!) and looked for my favorite cup, but I couldn’t find it.
Weird, I was sure it was in the dishwasher, clean.

Then I looked at the table and saw my lovely hot espresso already waiting for me.

If this is how the week starts, I’m not sure I want to imagine how it’s going to continue 😆

Important announcement, especially for BSD Cafe friends who don’t have a local account.

Over the past few days I noticed that, when browsing some public pages on our Mastodon server (especially the federated timeline, meaning posts coming from other instances as well), certain content could appear without a CW and in some cases it was pornographic, illegal, or generally not suitable for a general audience.
The problem is that this was visible even to users who were not logged in, which effectively made BSD Cafe a gateway to that content. Also, some media files are cached on our server, so it could look like BSD Cafe is the source of it.

For this reason I had to make a decision: I have disabled the ability for non-logged-in visitors to view posts coming from other instances.
This way, anyone visiting BSD Cafe without an account will only see BSD Cafe local content, helping us avoid potential issues, including legal ones.
Some of you (from other instances) thought you had been blocked because you could no longer see your posts here, but that is not the case: your posts are still fully visible to local users, as usual.

I have also re-enabled (at least for now) hashtag browsing, since BSD Cafe is one of the most well federated instances for BSD-related content and it would be a shame to lose that. However, I may reconsider this decision if it leads to problems.

Let me know if you notice anything unusual.

I've been experimenting with lightweight activitypub tools like gotosocial and snac2.

So far snac2 works, but seems incompatible with basically every frontend I've tried.

gotosocial is more compatible, but crashes randomly and won't stay online for 24hrs at a time.

What am I doing wrong here?

Anyone have any tips?

Originally created as a temporary setup to experiment with #snac, I later decided to keep it online. For about a year now, it’s been my most 'private', less technical corner. And I couldn’t be happier: it runs in a #FreeBSD jail, uses almost zero resources, and is always ready to serve me.
