        Das Fedi­ver­se wird noch immer häu­fig wie ein wei­te­rer Social-Media-Kanal betrach­tet. Doch genau das greift zu kurz. Ein paar Gedan­ken zur Dis­kus­si­on mit Kai Rüs­berg (@Ruhrnalist) zum #FediL­ab­Day.

        Vie­le Ver­ant­wort­li­che im Medi­en­be­reich den­ken ver­ständ­li­cher­wei­se in den Logi­ken von Insta­gram, Tik­Tok oder X. Dort wird Erfolg über Reich­wei­te, Inter­ak­ti­on, Klicks und Con­ver­si­ons gemes­sen. Wer Auf­merk­sam­keit erzeugt, gewinnt. Wer kei­ne sicht­ba­ren Reak­tio­nen her­vor­ruft, ver­liert an Bedeu­tung. Die­se Denk­wei­se stößt im Fedi­ver­se aller­dings an ihre Grenzen.

        Zum einen, weil vie­le Men­schen hier Inhal­te bewusst kon­su­mie­ren, ohne stän­dig zu liken, zu kom­men­tie­ren oder zu tei­len. Stil­ler Kon­sum ist kein Feh­ler des Sys­tems, son­dern Teil sei­ner Kul­tur. Nicht alles, was gele­sen wird, erzeugt auch eine sicht­ba­re Reak­ti­on. Man muss ja nicht like, um sei­nen Feed zu kuratieren.

        Vor allem aber ver­kennt die­se Sicht­wei­se, was das Fedi­ver­se eigent­lich ist.

        Social ist heute anders

        Social Media ist heu­te nicht mehr das, was es noch vor zehn oder fünf­zehn Jah­ren war. Die gro­ßen Platt­for­men haben sich von Tei­len des offe­nen Webs zu geschlos­se­nen Öko­sys­te­men ent­wi­ckelt. Wer kein Kon­to bei Insta­gram, Tik­Tok, Lin­ke­dIn oder Face­book hat, kann vie­le Inhal­te gar nicht oder nur ein­ge­schränkt sehen. 

        Die Mehr­heit der Men­schen hat gar kei­nen Account auf den meis­ten die­ser Platt­for­men:

        • 60 % der Deut­schen nut­zen Insta­gram nicht.
        • 80 % nut­zen Tik­Tok nicht.
        • 90 % nut­zen Lin­ke­dIn nicht.
        • 95 % nut­zen X nicht.

        Wer Inhal­te aus­schließ­lich dort bereit­stellt, macht sie für vie­le Men­schen schwer oder gar nicht erreichbar.

        Das Fediverse funktioniert grundlegend anders

        Das Fedi­ver­se basiert auf offe­nen Stan­dards. Inhal­te kön­nen gele­sen, ver­linkt, geteilt und gefun­den wer­den, ohne dass ein ein­zel­nes Unter­neh­men die Kon­trol­le dar­über besitzt. Es erin­nert damit eher an E‑Mail oder das offe­ne Web als an klas­si­sche Social-Media-Plattformen.

        Des­halb hal­te ich es für einen Feh­ler, Mast­o­don und das Fedi­ver­se ledig­lich als zusätz­li­chen Social-Media-Kanal neben Insta­gram oder Tik­Tok zu betrach­ten. Ich bin Mit­glied des Medi­en­rats der Medi­en­an­stalt Ham­burg Schles­wig-Hol­stein und wir spre­chen immer mal wie­der mit pri­va­ten Rund­funk­an­bie­tern. Da ist mir klar gewor­den, wie krass anders Radio und Fern­se­hen funk­tio­nie­ren als die For-Your-Feeds der Platt­for­men. Bei Radio und Fern­se­hen hängt es von jedem Anbie­ter selbst ab, ob er erfolg­reich ist oder nicht. Die Media Broad­cast ver­teilt im öffent­li­chen Auf­trag nach neu­tra­len Regeln nur die Fre­quen­zen. Die sagen nicht, dass sie mehr moder­nen Schla­ger haben wol­len und dre­hen dann die Reich­wei­te von Rock-Sen­dern run­ter. So ist das auch im Fedi­ver­se. Nur ohne Lizenz- und Frequenzvergabe.

        Für den öffent­lich-recht­li­chen Rund­funk könn­te das Fedi­ver­se ein eigen­stän­di­ger digi­ta­ler Ver­brei­tungs­weg sein. Ein Ver­brei­tungs­weg, der ähn­lich unab­hän­gig funk­tio­niert wie Rund­funk selbst.

        Mediatheken vernetzen!

        Beson­ders deut­lich wird das beim Blick auf die Media­the­ken. tau­sen­de Men­schen besit­zen bereits Accounts bei ARD und ZDF. Trotz­dem bleibt ihre Rol­le dort pas­siv. Sie kön­nen Inhal­te anse­hen, aber nicht ein­mal aus­drü­cken, dass ihnen eine Sen­dung gefal­len hat. Wer eine Doku­men­ta­ti­on emp­feh­len, eine Serie unter­stüt­zen oder sich mit ande­ren Zuschaue­rin­nen und Zuschau­ern aus­tau­schen möch­te, muss dafür auf kom­mer­zi­el­le Platt­for­men wechseln.

        Dabei lie­ße sich das auch anders den­ken: Wenn Media­the­ken über Acti­vi­ty­Pub Teil des Fedi­ver­se wür­den, könn­ten Nut­ze­rin­nen und Nut­zer mit ihren bestehen­den Accounts Sen­dun­gen fol­gen, Emp­feh­lun­gen aus­spre­chen, Dis­kus­sio­nen füh­ren oder Inhal­te in ihre eige­ne Time­line ein­bin­den. Die Unter­hal­tung über öffent­lich-recht­li­che Inhal­te wür­de dann nicht mehr auf Platt­for­men von Meta, Byte­Dance oder X statt­fin­den, son­dern auf einer offe­nen Infra­struk­tur – größ­ten­teils sogar bei den Sen­dern selbst.

        Das wäre kein wei­te­rer Social-Media-Kanal. Es wäre die Erwei­te­rung der Media­thek zu einem öffent­li­chen Kom­mu­ni­ka­ti­ons­raum. Ich bin mir sicher, dass Ex-ZDF-Ver­wal­tungs­rats­mit­glied Leon­hard Dobusch (@leonido) dar­über schon län­ger redet. Ich fin­de es nur gera­de nicht.

        Gleich­zeit sind die Öffent­lich-Recht­li­chen Rund­funk­an­stal­ten so groß, dass ihre Anwe­sen­heit einen gro­ßen Anteil zum Erfolg des Fedi­ver­se bei­tra­gen und den Weg auch für pri­va­te Medi­en berei­ten würde.

        Digitalen Souveränität

        Gera­de unter dem Gesichts­punkt der digi­ta­len Sou­ve­rä­ni­tät erscheint mir es mit wich­tig, in die­ser Art über das Fedi­ver­se zu spre­chen. Wäh­rend öffent­li­che Ver­wal­tun­gen zuneh­mend auf Freie Soft­ware und offe­ne Stan­dards set­zen, ver­la­gert sich die digi­ta­le Öffent­lich­keit immer stär­ker auf Platt­for­men, deren Regeln in Kali­for­ni­en oder Peking nach rein kom­mer­zi­el­len oder poli­ti­schen Maß­stä­ben fest­ge­legt wer­den. Der öffent­lich-recht­li­che Rund­funk macht sich damit lang­fris­tig von Kon­zer­nen abhän­gig, deren Inter­es­sen nicht zwangs­läu­fig mit dem öffent­li­chen Auf­trag übereinstimmen.

        Hin­zu kommt eine Ent­wick­lung, die vie­le noch unter­schät­zen: „Künst­li­che Intel­li­genz“ ver­än­dert die Art, wie Men­schen Infor­ma­tio­nen fin­den. Geschlos­se­ne Platt­for­men wer­den dabei zuneh­mend zu Sack­gas­sen – dort kön­nen und dür­fen die Craw­ler der Anbie­tern nicht suchen. Offe­ne Inhal­te und offe­ne Stan­dards gewin­nen dadurch an Bedeu­tung. Wer auch in Zukunft auf­find­bar und rele­vant blei­ben möch­te, soll­te sei­ne Inhal­te nicht aus­schließ­lich in den Silos gro­ßer Platt­for­men veröffentlichen.

        Natür­lich braucht auch das Fedi­ver­se Kenn­zah­len. Aber wenn wir sei­nen Erfolg aus­schließ­lich an Likes, Boosts und Klicks mes­sen, über­tra­gen wir die Logik des Platt­form­ka­pi­ta­lis­mus auf ein Netz­werk, das gera­de als Alter­na­ti­ve dazu ent­stan­den ist.

        Das Fedi­ver­se ist des­halb nicht ein­fach ein wei­te­rer Social-Media-Kanal. Es ist ein Bau­stein für digi­ta­le Sou­ve­rä­ni­tät, für eine offe­ne digi­ta­le Öffent­lich­keit und für ein Inter­net, das nicht voll­stän­dig von eini­gen weni­gen Tech­no­lo­gie­kon­zer­nen kon­trol­liert wird.

        Wir soll­ten auf­hö­ren zu fra­gen, ob das Fedi­ver­se das nächs­te Insta­gram wer­den kann. Was pas­siert, wenn wir es statt­des­sen als digi­ta­le Infra­struk­tur begrei­fen? Ich mag des­we­gen auch den Begriff „Social Web“ lie­ber als „Fedi­ver­se“, denn das Acti­vi­ty­Pub-Pro­to­koll macht das klas­si­sche Web „social“.

          My GoToSocial instance at gts.snakepit.us now has open signups with manual approval. If you have ever wanted a quiet, hand-moderated corner of the fediverse, here is how joining works:

          1. Fill out the form at gts.snakepit.us/signup. Pick a username, add an email, and write a few sentences about who you are and why you want in. The reason matters: it is what I actually review.

          2. Your request lands in my moderation queue the moment you submit, and I approve or deny it by hand. No email verification loop, no waiting on a robot.

          3. Once approved you sign in with your email and password and you are done. Use any fediverse app you like, or Sidewinder (gtsweb.snakepit.us), the client I built for the instance: installable PWA, push notifications, a catch-up digest for when you have been away, and full keyboard navigation.

          What the instance is: small, on my own hardware at home, nightly backups, no algorithm, no ads, no tracking. I vouch for people one at a time instead of running an open door, which is exactly why the form asks for a reason. This is essentially what I have been doing for DMV.Community for years and it has worked well for keeping it peaceful and friendly here.

                I've just published version 2.96 of , the simple, minimalistic instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:

                Accounts can be marked as cool; anytime a cool account posts something, a notification will be sent.

                Fixed an issue in Direct Messages sent from the people page; these posts didn't explicitly mention the recipient, and that confused some implementations.

                Fixed crash when sending an empty EmojiReact.

                HTTP requests can now be forced to use IPv6 by setting the force_ipv6_requests configuration directive to true in server.json.

                Fixed a socket buffering issue under OpenIndiana (contributed by aleteoryx).

                Mastodon API: Added missing requested_by field in the relationships entrypoint (contributed by Uilebheist), implemented the followers entrypoint (contributed by Uilebheist), use Mastodon's RFC3339 format for markers (contributed by nowster), fixed posts with muted words not being filtered out, fixed editing of media alt texts.

                Tweaked HTML to avoid elinks complaining about a missing '' fragment.

                Fixed a bug that made deleting the notification email address impossible.

                RSS timelines are now cached because fuckers hammer for them continuously (probably AI crap bots).

                Added information to README.md on how to build and install on Illumos / OpenIndiana Hipster 2026.04 (contributed by aleteoryx).

                            I've just published version 2.95 of , the simple, minimalistic instance server written in C. This is an important release, as it fixes an issue that can lead to denial of service attacks, so please update as soon as possible. It also includes the following changes:

                            Fixed a bug in the notification page that made snac hang forever while trying to read abnormally big files.

                            Improved support for text-only web browsers: it's now possible to configure a set of web browser user-agent strings that will receive simpler HTML in the private timeline web UI. Basically, it consists in avoiding details / summary HTML tags as much as possible.

                            Added some fixes to media proxy code.

                            Fixed EmojiReact code to allow any emoticon defined in emojis.json, not only those with colon-wrapped identifiers.

                            Fixed a bug in notification filtering (paging was sometimes incorrect).

                            Added a notification filter for Webmentions.

                            Mastodon API: Don't return reactions count as string (contributed by mkljczk), implemented GET /v1/media (contributed by clairemont).

                            Fixed bug in documentation examples (contributed by Sprite_tm).

                            Updated Ukrainian and Russian translations (contributed by wincentbalin and koru).

                              I just adjusted my relay instance which now also finally supports ! Of course, it also supports Pleroma, snac, Mastodon, littlefedi, starling and many other ones!

                              With relays, your own posted content gets distributed to all connected instances, as well you get the content all other instances. Currently, mostly tech related instances are connected, focusing on , , / , and many other things!

                                Hi everyone, I'm Stefano

                                Also known as the BSD Cafe and illumos Cafe barista - @stefano@bsd.cafe and @stefano@illumos.cafe

                                This is the first post from littleOne (littleone.littlefedi.social), the first littleFedi instance open to outside users.

                                littleFedi is a new ActivityPub server, still in active development, written in Go and shipped as a single binary. It speaks standard ActivityPub, so it federates normally with Mastodon, snac, GoToSocial, Akkoma and the rest of the fediverse, and it exposes a Mastodon-compatible API, so most existing apps already work with it.

                                A few things about it that aren't the usual fediverse defaults:

                                • Catch-up instead of an algorithm. Timelines stay chronological, full stop. There's a separate /catchup page, visited on demand, that ranks what you missed using only signals this instance already has locally - who you follow boosted it, replies and favourites delivered here, hashtags you follow. No external popularity data comes in, nothing about what you read is tracked. It answers "what did I miss" without turning into a feed that decides for you.

                                • Static blogging built in. Any post can be marked as a blog post and gets published as a plain static page under /@username/blog/, with its own permalink, Atom feed, and no JavaScript or database hit per view, while still being a normal federated post underneath. A proper home for longer writing that doesn't need to compete with a timeline.

                                • Self-expiring posts. Any post can be given a timer and auto-delete on its own.

                                • Bubble timeline. A middle ground between local and federated: a timeline scoped to a set of instances you've chosen to group together, not just your own or everything.

                                • littleMesh. A way to federate without a public domain, certificate, or open port at all - meant for something like a Raspberry Pi behind NAT. Instances get an address derived from an Ed25519 key pair and reach each other through pinned relays that never see plaintext.

                                • No trends, no suggestions. These are intentionally left empty. Nothing here is trying to surface "popular" content or keep anyone scrolling longer.

                                • Security defaults taken seriously. Signed federation (HTTP Signatures), optional Object Integrity Proofs, TOTP MFA, audit logs, and full account export, migration and deletion if you ever want your data to live somewhere else.

                                This instance is here to test all of that with real accounts, not just a small group ones'. In the next few days I'll be reaching out to everyone who already told me they were interested, to set the first accounts up - an invite is coming. If you'd rather just follow along and see how it goes, that works too.

                                It's a test instance, so expect the occasional rough edge. If something breaks or feels wrong, tell me - that's exactly what this phase is for.

                                    I've just published version 2.94 of , the simple, minimalistic instance server written in C. It includes the following changes (mostly bug fixes):

                                    The author of a replied post is no longer added to the CC: line, as it does not have much sense.

                                    Fixed mentions for users with hyphens in their identifiers.

                                    Unlisted replies to unknown posts were being skipped from the timeline, so don't do that.

                                    If an actor marked as broken gets a post boosted (proving that is [back] functioning), it's unmarked as such.

                                    Don't try (and fail) to parse non-UTC dates in posts (I'll provide a real fix eventually).

                                    Fixed a redirection loop in the /users alias.

                                    Mastodon API: fixed a bug that made changing the sensitive content string impossible, avatars and headers can be deleted (contributed by bm90).

                                    Updated Czech and Italian translations (contributed by pmjv and fidiben).

                                        I've just published version 2.93 of , the simple, minimalistic instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:

                                        Added a new admirations entry point to the web UI, containing a timeline of liked, boosted and reacted posts. Please take note that, after installing the new version, it will start empty, and be filled with subsequent reactions (contributed by violette).

                                        It's now possible to disable showing posts in a given set of languages.

                                        Nested quoted posts are limited up to 3 levels.

                                        New configuration knob: by setting keep_replies_posts to true in server.json, remote posts that a local user has replied to are retained in the public timeline, preventing them from being purged (contributed by hanchan).
