#TIL how to add swap space easily on #OpenBSD

1) Create a swapfile made of many many 0's, in the size of how large a swapfile you want, so e.g. for 16gb:
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=~/.swapfile bs=1m count =16384

2) Add it as swap:
# swapctl -a ~/.swapfile

3) For great success, check it out to get warm fuzzy feelings:

$ swapctl -l
Device              512-blocks     Used    Avail Capacity  Priority
/dev/sd2b             17065992        0 17065992     0%    0
/home/puffy/.swapfile   33554432        0 33554432     0%    0

#TIL that I can enable "Push to Create" in my @forgejo@floss.social instance. I just backed up many projects from a Proprietary Service (which I might soon lose access to), using a single command for each project.

It made me really appreciate the composability of CLI when I could type git remote add forgejo .../$(basename $(pwd)).git && git push ... to get that micro-automation going.

Thanks to Lua with batteries included and mise-en-place I now have automatic setup for general-purpose scripting in #Lua. I just needed to learn how to set the package search path.

#TIL using #windows API from #zig code, and it's soo much nicer than its original #cpp. Function arguments (that are usually cryptically named integers) can be easily understood just by browsing their type definitions. Pointers are much more specific. Thanks Johnatan Marler for the zigwin32 bindings!

#TIL to use the gdb debugger's command line, without any IDE. While less convenient, I'm glad I had this option when things got a bit unusual.

Same thing happened to me with #git and Linux earlier. Now that I think about it, I'm surprised I learned gdb CLI so late.

#TIL that applications from @FlatpakApps@fosstodon.org integrate much better than Snap with the rest of my #KDE desktop in #Kubuntu. They appear correctly in the application launcher, keep being pinned to the taskbar through updating, and have better metadata in the Discover app.

I'm really tempted to use the Forester notes approach to writing my thesis. It is a very interesting approach to scientific writing, where (as I understood it) atomic ideas are described separate files that can be linked but also arranged into longer documents.

The original is written in #OCaml with quite involved setup, but #TIL about two single-executable #Rust implementations: Kodama and Weibian.

I'm still trying them out, but luckily both support @typst@mastodon.social so at least I can keep a common content format between them and final document
