A new threat actor called Amaranth Dragon, linked to APT41 state-sponsored Chinese operations, exploited the CVE-2025-8088 vulnerability in WinRAR in espionage attacks on government and law enforcement agencies.

The hackers combined legitimate tools with the custom Amaranth Loader to deliver encrypted payloads from command-and-control (C2) servers behind Cloudflare infrastructure, for more accurate targeting and increased stealth.

According to researchers at cybersecurity company Check Point, Amaranth Dragon targeted organizations in Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, and the Philippines.

The CVE-2025-8088 vulnerability can be exploited to write malicious files to arbitrary locations by leveraging the Alternate Data Streams (ADS) feature in Windows. Multiple threat actors exploited it in zero-day attacks since mid-2025 to achieve persistence by dropping malware in the Windows Startup folder.

Microsoft kommt im Januar 2026 nicht zur Ruhe. Nach einem fehlerhaften Patchday sorgt nun auch das optionale Update KB5074105 für Windows 11 24H2 und 25H2 für Ärger. Nutzer melden ausgefallene Kameras und Probleme mit Sperrbildschirmen.

Nachdem gparted mir die #Windows Systempartition zerschossen hat, läufts jetzt auf die harte Art. #Linux statt Windows. Ich hab ja immer noch ein Backup.

Zum heutigen #DUT habe ich ein wenig ausgemistet. Nachdem ich kürzlich #Wero aktiviert habe, habe ich heute meinen #PayPal Account gelöscht. Und da ich mittlerweile ausschließlich #Linux nutze und #Windows seit knapp zwei Jahren nicht mehr gebootet habe, habe ich die Partition kurzerhand auch endlich gelöscht.

Aktuell kommen erfreulich viele Anfragen im Kontext von #DiDay rein 🤩

Ein weiteres Smartphone wird gerade aus dem Würgegriff von Google/Apple befreit, auch wenn ich mich erst einmal etwas bzgl. Android-Backups einlesen musste. Die Variante Nextcloud mit Round Sync ließ sich aber am Ende mit wenigen Klicks einrichten, damit die Daten vor dem Wechsel auf /e/ OS o.ä. außerhalb des Gerätes liegen. WebDAV ist schon genial!

Man merkt bei der Migration aber, wie sehr die großen Tech-Konzerne die Befreiung mit willkürlichen Hindernissen verhindern wollen. Ich vergleiche es mit einem Gefängnisausbruch: Ist am Anfang aufwendig und man muss Hürden überwinden, die Freiheit ist aber zu verlockend 😉

Nächstes Projekt dann: Windows auf einem Laptop durch Linux ersetzen. Da habe ich zumindest mehr Routine, damit entfällt für mich als Berater die Einarbeitung.

@stefano @christopher I am not sure if I'd say #Linux is becoming like #Windows. I do recall similar statements made on the Debian-User mailing list on a previous release when xorg introduced autoconfiguration. A lot of people were pissed that it was making choices for you instead of manually configuring the xorg.conf file.

Honestly, that was a good thing. Painful doesn't begin to describe it but users were unaware they could still hand-configure the file.

There has been, however, more stuff added to Linux over the last several years. Call it bloat, call it whatever you want. OSes change. But it has been gradually moving away from simplicity.

I miss the simplicity.

However, to reply to your original post, coming from COTS solutions, sometimes the vast amount of choice can be overwhelming. For instance, when it comes to #FreeBSD #jails it used to just be jails. Now, it's thin, thick, classic, networking. I understand they have their places but it would be helpful to provide more detailed explanations, tutorials, or best practices for each. The FreeBSD Handbook is good but just scratches the surface but often leaves more questions. It would help with learning and in part...marketing.

On a side note: The FreeBSD Handbook is a great resource but there are opportunities to improve it, like tailoring it to new users (better empathy), best practices, architectural examples, and links to additional resources and info.
