Back in my boy scout days, our troop got a tour of a local Army Corp of Engineers facility circa 1994-95. From a tech perspective, that blew my 6th grade brain. Engineers using cutting edge CAD tools on high performance #UNIX workstations with massive 27" CRT monitors...when the rest of the public were using Windows 3.1 or possibly Windows 95.

Immer wieder ein Trauerspiel - egal ob #Windows oder #Linux - bei #Updates wird weder der für die #Installation benötigte #Speicherplatz korrekt angegeben, noch während der Installation überwacht.

Lokaler Speicher wird einfach vollgeknallt, Installation bricht kommentarlos ab. Pech für die Anwender*in 💁

Sieh zu, wie du mit dem verhunzten System zurande kommst. Vielleicht bereinigt ein Neustart DEIN Problem - vielleicht startet das System auch gar nicht mehr, weil es keinen Speicherplatz hat 🤷

Monat 4 ohne Windows – und der Ballast ist endgültig weg. 🐧🔥

Ich hab mittlerweile nicht mal mehr Dual-Boot. Ehrlich gesagt: Der Aufwand, den Mist auch nur als Backup mitzuschleifen, war mir einfach zu viel.

Schon krass, wenn man merkt, mit was für einem Scheiß man sich jahrelang freiwillig belastet hat. Es fühlt sich so gut an, diesen Klotz am Bein endlich los zu sein. Es läuft einfach.

An article has been published[1] explaining how to prevent #Chrome from downloading the #Gemini Nano model on #Windows via a Registry change. But it seems to me that such a method is only effective for as long as Google respects that policy in the Registry, doesn't change its name/path, etc.

Instead, has anybody tried creating an empty weights.bin file in the relevant location[2], and then removing all permissions from that file so that Chrome can't read, write, replace, or do anything else with it?

Der Artikel ist lesenswert, weil er Probleme in der Sicherheitsarchitektur von Desktop-#Linux gut beschreibt und ein Gefühl dafür gibt, warum man auch mit installiertem Linux nicht das Hirn abschalten und Sicherheitsregeln über Bord werfen soll.

Auf der anderen Seite empfinde ich ihn auch als etwas tendenziös, weil Problematiken, die #macOS und #Windows haben, aber in Linux nicht oder abgeschwächt existieren, einfach nicht benannt werden. Dazu werden jüngere Entwicklungen einfach ausgeblendet.

Linux gilt als sicherer als Windows oder macOS. Mein neuer Artikel zeigt: im Alltag stimmt das oft nicht. Ein Windows 11 oder ein MacBook ist heute in vielen Punkten besser geschützt. Die Festplatte ist von Anfang an verschlüsselt, der Fingerabdruck landet im sicheren Chip statt offen auf der SSD, und Programme können nicht einfach alle persönlichen Daten lesen. Eine ehrliche Bestandsaufnahme.

Tl;dr: I have celebrated one year since having switched from #Windows to #Linux by... switching from Linux to OpenBSD my daily driver OS. Why? OpenBSD's "proactive security by default" stance is the best for me - and it runs on my somewhat legacy hardware. Most of the essential software I used on Linux is also here, so for most purposes OpenBSD is fine for me.

As I was doing the intake for a migration from Windows 11 to a Linux (undecided which, although Mint is leading the charge), yesterday, I got to use Windows 11 for the first time in my life. Now, I heard so many times about just how bad Win11 is, but nothing could have prepared me for the absolute shit show that is Microsoft's modern OS. I honestly feel sorry for anyone who is forced to use it for any reason. Like, I think I might prefer using WindowsME over that.

As Commodore went bankrupt in 1994, we were required to restart MC development for Windows, enabling us to increase the resolution to 640 x 480 pixels.

Sometime around 2017 (IIRC) I got nostalgic for a little "netbook" type computer and decided, for some reason, that an HP Stream 14 would scratch that itch.

These are really low spec machines, even for 2016-2017. It came with Windows 10 and the first Windows Update basically filled the disk and effectively bricked the device. LOL!

I installed Linux on it after that (ofc) but didn't really use it much. So slow....

I was digging around in my service manuals library this evening and stumbled over it in a drawer of files... for some unknown reason it was in the drawer.

I started it up thinking it was still running Arch from back before Covid and might be entertaining to try to get it to update to the present.

Hmm, Alpine 3.21 boots console but sway is installed. Weird, no recollection of doing anything with this machine 12-18 months ago. "I'm not saying it's aliens..."

Ok, Alpine updates to 3.23 without issues. I'm not much of a tiling window manager person so I installed Plasma. Bad idea! With 4GB of ram and an afterthought of a CPU and storage it doesn't run very well at all.

Installed LXQt with labwc and it runs great! Tweaking and themeing to come. (Hi @Tionisla 👋 )

Not sure what I'm going to do with this machine but currently it is pretty usable for simple stuff. Screen and keyboard sucks, pretty close to e-waste. Lesson: ~$200 (retail) laptop is about as good as you would expect a $200 laptop to be. Ha.
