I’ve been a long-time Kubuntu user, currently on 26.04 LTS.

Mostly because I want Debian-ish stability, KDE, reasonably current software, and something that will happily run on moderately elderly hardware without demanding a blood sacrifice to the upgrade gods.

And I increasingly want to escape the Canonical Slop™.

So I’ve been thinking: Debian Testing? 🤔

Except then I went looking into Debian’s current position on generative AI and -

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, DEBIAN?

So apparently Debian is having an enormous philosophical argument about whether the robot should be allowed into the kitchen while I am standing outside trying to find an operating system that doesn't make me want to scream.

Which leaves me with the obvious question:

If I want KDE, stability, reasonably current packages, decent support for older hardware, no Canonical nonsense, AND a Free Software project that is taking the whole GenAI mess seriously… WHAT THE FUCK DO I RUN?

Debian Testing was looking so promising, too. 😭

Linux distro hopping has become a personality crisis.

#BeOS was my first experience of installing an alternative OS, and its #FreeSoftware remake #HaikuOS, with a confirmed No AI policy, just released its latest version. So I'll check that out again.

Other Nixes like NetBSD are tempting... till I remember the key software I'd run on them, like desktop environments (e.g. my preferred #Xfce) are also skipping down the Sloppy Brick Road.

@chadmccullough This saddens me as well, I recently started testing NetBSD for this reason, but I was holding out hope on this Debian vote, as it has been my preferred OS distribution for decades.

Oh, well. Time to put more energy into the testing of/transition to NetBSD. I also just updated my software donations rotation, replacing Debian with the NetBSD foundation.

I have decided to shut down my #mastodon instance, and all my public facing web services.

This will happen in 3 months time, on December 29, 2026, to allow everyone to backup and migrate.

The reason for this is that I can no longer trust:

- the #Linux kernel
- #Debian
- rails
- most #Foss projects

Additionally, I'm basically out of storage, it is unaffordable to purchase more, and no one is interested in donating to help.

Our bastion of free computing has been poisoned by fascist gen ai slop, and basically NONE of it can be trusted anymore.

It's impossible to vet slop from an ecosystem that is welcoming of it.

This makes it nearly impossible to update my systems, which makes it harder to pretend it's even remotely secure.

I'm fucking devestated - gutted by what has happened to computing, and I just do not have the resources to keep fighting.

Fuck all you #LLM boosters into the sun. May you learn the folly of your way and DO SOMETHING TO FIX IT!

Well, fuck. After more than 30 years of using Linux, it seems the days of me running Linux are numbered and I will be moving to a different option. An option that I started working on a few months back.

As a user of Debian for many, many years, I am seriously disappointed with this decision. I had higher hopes that Debian, out of all of the Linux projects out there, would be more responsible and understand the negative ethical issues of using AI. It seems I was wrong.

Anyways, I've already spent some time removing #neovim from about half of my build/development containers. For now I'm going back to #vim, but once vim-classic or #evi is packaged in #debian, I'll switch to one of those.

Disappointed that #Debian has chosen what seems like the worst possible option in its vote on LLMs.

No acknowledgement of the harms involved in LLM usage; instead, a claim that they ‘substantially improve productivity’. (It claims not to be an endorsement but makes only pro-LLM statements.)

Vague platitudes about using LLMs ‘responsibly’ when it’s become very clear by now that LLM users can’t be trusted to be responsible without constant supervision. And no requirement for disclosure of LLM usage, even.

It didn’t seem likely that the strongest anti-LLM proposals would pass, but it would have been nice to have at least some restrictions put into place.

I guess since the whole "Flatpak creating a dependency on systemd" bullshit has surfaced this week there has been some other conversations about systemd going on throughout the Fediverse.

I've seen some oblique references to Debian making an effort to make OpenRC more viable as an alternate init system. That's about all I've gathered on my hit-n-run timeline surfing the last several days. Not sure if this is an official Debian project or just someone's wish list.

Anyone have the skinny? Links to actual discussions?

This time it's #Debian with #Docker. I used to avoid containers, preferring to run services directly instead. But setting up backups made me appreciate the separation between the application data in image and persistent state in mounted volumes. The final piece that convinced me is the ability to self-host my own container registry with @forgejo@floss.social

I'm doing the initial setup through #Ansible (learned from @notthebee@tilde.zone), but specific applications are managed via dockge. The ambition to do every adjustment through playbooks burns out really fast when working with a single instance.
